Arequipa is a department of Peru located in the southern part of the country. It has 528 km of coastline on the Pacific Ocean - the longest regional coastline - and borders the departments of Ica, Ayacucho, Apurímac, Cuzco, Puno and Moquegua. The coastal zone is one of the driest portions of the coastal desert, meanwhile the interior Andean region presents steep valleys and canyons.
