Our tour starts early in the morning at the informed meeting points. You can choose either one to start this full-day adventure.
Itinerary details:
9:00 AM: Pick up of the other travelers at the second meeting point, Parque de la 93. From here we will leave Bogotá towards Zipaquirá. It will be approximately an hour and a half of travel, Zipaquirá is located about 50 km north of the capital. We will leave the city behind to immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the neighboring towns, surrounded by vegetation and authenticity.
10:45 AM: We will arrive at Zipaquirá, a charming colonial town founded in 1600, known for being the home of the Salt Cathedral and its beautiful architecture, with cobbled streets, colorful houses and beautiful squares.
11:00 AM: Entrance to the Salt Cathedral, where you will begin the tour through the underground tunnels and the chapels carved into the rock of salt. The coordinator will give you the entrance to the cathedral without the need for long lines and waiting, and will give you the instructions to use the audio guide during your entire visit underground.
From the moment you enter the salt mine, you will be able to appreciate the majesty of the structure, you will learn about the history and construction process of the cathedral. As you advance, you will be able to observe the chapels that represent the stations of the Via Crucis, all carved in salt rock and decorated with imposing sculptures that will leave you speechless.
Finally, you will reach the central nave of the Cathedral, where each detail and its special lighting enhance the beauty of the structure, creating a magical and mystical atmosphere. There, you will be able to appreciate a large cross carved into the rock and listen to religious music in an atmosphere of silence and reflection.
Zipaquirá is famous for its gastronomy, and in the town you can find a wide variety of restaurants that offer typical Colombian and regional dishes. Among the most popular dishes are pea soup, ajiaco, meat mix, sancocho de gallina (chicken stew) and lomo al trapo (pork loin).
And if you choose to walk around town, we recommend visiting the Plaza de los Comuneros, a popular place for meetings and cultural events. Or one of the town`s museums such as the Archaeological Museum and the Gold Museum, which tell the history of the region and its indigenous culture.
