Our tour starts early in the morning at the meeting points provided. You can choose either of the two to start this full-day adventure.
Itinerary details:
9:00 AM: Pick up the other travelers at the second meeting point, Parque de la 93. From here we will leave Bogotá towards Zipaquirá. It will be approximately an hour and a half trip, Zipaquirá is located about 50 km north of the capital. We will leave the city behind to immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the neighboring villages, surrounded by greenery and authenticity.
10:45 AM: We will arrive at Zipaquirá, a charming colonial town founded in 1600, known for being home to the Salt Cathedral and its beautiful architecture, with cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and beautiful squares.
11:00 AM: Entrance to the Salt Cathedral, where the tour of the underground tunnels and chapels carved into the rock salt will begin. The coordinator will provide you with entry to the cathedral without the need to wait in long lines and instruct you on how to use the audio guide throughout your underground visit.
From the moment you enter the salt mine, you will appreciate the majesty of the structure, and you will learn about the history and construction process of the cathedral. As you walk along, you`ll be able to see the chapels that represent the Stations of the Cross, all carved from rock salt and decorated with stunning sculptures that will leave you speechless.
Finally, you`ll reach the nave of the Cathedral, where every detail and its special lighting enhance the beauty of the structure, creating a magical and mystical atmosphere. There, you`ll be able to appreciate a large cross carved into the rock and listen to religious music in an atmosphere of silence and reflection.
Zipaquirá is famous for its gastronomy, and in town you can find a wide variety of restaurants that offer typical Colombian and regional dishes. Among the most popular dishes are pea soup, ajiaco, mixed meats, chicken sancocho, and lomo al trapo.
And if you choose to walk around town, we recommend visiting the Plaza de los Comuneros, a popular place for meetings and cultural events. Or one of the town`s museums, such as the Archaeological Museum and the Gold Museum, which tell the history of the region and its indigenous culture.
