The best time of year to visit Chiloé is during the months of December to March, when the weather is warmer and drier. During this period, tourists can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, observing flora and fauna, and visiting the famous wooden churches, which are a World Heritage Site. In addition, there is greater availability of tourist services and cultural events, such as traditional fairs.
To get to Chiloé from Santiago de Chile, tourists can take a direct flight to Mocopulli Airport in Castro, which takes approximately 2 hours. Alternatively, they can fly to Puerto Montt and then take a ferry from Pargua to Chiloé Island, which offers a scenic experience of the Chilean landscape. Another option is the bus trip, which includes the ferry crossing and takes around 14 hours.
Chiloé has several tourist attractions including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Churches of Chiloé, the Chiloé National Park with its stunning natural landscapes, and the town of Castro with its famous palafitos and Handicraft Market. However, it is also possible to get around using public transportation, such as buses and taxis. There are organized tours that offer guided visits to the main points of interest, which can be a great option for those who prefer not to drive.
In Chiloé, tourists should try curanto, a traditional dish that combines seafood, meat and vegetables cooked in a pit covered with hot stones. Other typical dishes include pulmay, a variation of curanto, and milcao, a potato cake. It is also recommended to try chapalele, a kind of potato dumpling, and the various dishes based on seafood and fresh fish thanks to the rich marine biodiversity of the region.
