The Antarctic continent, or just Antartica, is the southernmost continent on Earth.
It is situated entirely in the southern hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean.
It contains the geographic south pole, so colloquially and by extension is also known as the south pole.
At 14,000,000 km², it is the fourth largest continent after Asia, America and Africa. Compared to Oceania, Antarctica is almost twice its size.
About 98% of Antarctica is covered with ice, averaging 1.9 km thick, extending to all but the northernmost ports on the Antarctic Peninsula.
