Where to eat the best empanadas in Salta

Salteñas empanadas are on the podium of the more delicious in Argentina, they are small, ideal for not stopping eating. Some prepare them spicy, others serve them with yasgua sauce (tomato sauce) or put lemon inside and accompany them with a glass of very cold Torrontés.

The classic Salta meat empanadas have boiled potatoes, eggs, paprika, green onion, cumin, and sometimes paprika. Other varieties of meat are those of Charqui (dehydrated meat dried in the sun), which can be eaten in the clay oven or fried. You have to be very careful because they are so juicy that they tend to stain, hence the saying that "you have to eat them with your legs wide open".

In addition to the classic meat and chicken empanas from Salta, there are those with cheese that are super tasty! They carry cheese, onion and paprika. It is an excellent option for vegetarians, as well as humita (corn cream).

The trick to savoring these delicious empanadas is that they are eaten fresh out of the clay oven and with a little sauce and cold water to wet them little by little and thus lower the temperature and at the same time increase the heat. Doña Salta

Near square 9 of Julio, in the heart of the city is find this old Salta house, an emblematic place to eat some delicious empanadas and have a good time.

 

It has show kitchen and a drinks bar, where you can order to accompany the empanadas, an outstanding torrontés of the house or a craft beer.


The menu is quite extensive, where highlights the patties made in the great furnace of clay, which gives the empanadas a rich flavor and wood-smoked, the most Recommended are the classic meat, the goat cheese and spicy humita.

 

Space for something sweet, I recommend you after the empanadas, try the characteristic Salta nougat, a kind of cake accompanied by dulce de leche and delicious almonds.

 

Doña Salta has a garden and a good setting regional with colored looms, clay pots and leather decorations.

La Criollita

The flavors of La Criollita are spacious and generous, among which stand out are the cheese and humita empanadas. But they also have other varieties very rich like pumpkin with cheese, broccoli or spinach with white sauce.

El Buen Gusto

Is probably the empanada legendary, that of the millimeter and perfect repulgue. A place that has decades of existence, where everything seems to be half finished neither has a sign that identifies it and sells about 2500 empanadas a day on weekends.

 

Other peculiar characteristic is that only empanadas are sold and they are served on plates made of metal.

 

The business family member who started Don Cecilio Bravo started with street vending at the railway station in the year 45, currently it takes three generations, and the same recipe as 60 years ago: they are made on the day with homemade dough and fresh ingredients.

 

The meat ones (chopped with a knife, with potato, green onion and a condiment with paprika from Cachi) are the star, 70% of the orders are of that flavor. And as in Salta they are very traditional with likes, there are just two more: (a which are added those of tuna only on weekends).

 

In this local you will notice that the vast majority of customers are from Salta and make long lines on weekends, so it is always advisable to go with weather.

Roque Garcia

Is the new classic, since although it has many fewer years of trajectory than the rest, earned a big name among the spaces of empanadas  salteñas. It is located at the exit of the city to San Lorenzo, is a gourmet space that has other Gastronomic variants and a large selection of wines. 

 

Stand out the juicy patties, both of meat like cheese, they are baked in a clay oven and served with tomato sauce grated and ají locoto of Bolivian origin. They are also known for Arabic specialties and gourmet delicacies, such as mushrooms a Parmigiana gratin.

 

In Roque García does not deliver home deliveries, they can be bought to go but you have to go find them.

El Patio de la Empanada

Within this space there are several posts of empanadas that will guarantee you a very authentic flavor, you can order meat, humita, cheese, chicken and jerky (dehydrated meat dried in the sun), and can be baked or fries. 

 

The interesting thing about Patio de la Empanada is that it has so many stalls that it is worth it is worth trying several of them, and notice the differences in the recipes of each empanadera.

Marcelo Empanadas is recognized for the flavor of its fried empanadas: juicy, crunchy and seasoned with spices from the Calchaquí Valleys.

Marcelo Empanadas has been in the business for 20 years, it is located in the eastern part of the city Salteña about 10 minutes by car from the center.

El Churqui

The rest-bar is found located in Los Vaqueros 20 minutes by car from downtown. On weekends it can be seen full of people inside and others queuing to sit down to eat the traditional El Churqui empanada (pieces jerky meat, sugar, salt, fat, egg, onion, garlic, hard-boiled egg and raisins).

 

They have other Varieties also worth trying like chicken, humita, pumpkin, meat and cheese.


It's a site highly recognized by local people, since the products used are from great quality, which gives an unbeatable flavor to your baked empanadas.

La Casona del Molino

It is an old house located minutes from downtown, this restaurant has a quite relaxed atmosphere where whoever wants to pick up a guitar and start singing.  It consists of the free club mode, that is, anyone who feels like it can bring their guitar or take some of the site and make music.

 

La Casona del Molino is a of the few traditional clubs left.

 

Regarding its strong that are the empanadas, these are served baked in clay, They are of the traditional size, that is to say, quite small, so you have to keep in mind to order a good quantity. They are offered with meat, humita and cheese with grated tomato sauce and ají locoto of Bolivian origin that is here rooted as usual.

 

 

I recommend accompanying them with some torrontés or house malbec. Also They have draft beer, fernet with coca or campari.

La Salteñeria Empanadas

It is a place simple and very well attended, characterized by its exquisite patties baked in clay and fried. The empanadas stars are that of meat cut to knife, chicken (La Salteña Potosina) and cheese. All are small and juicy.

 

La Salteñeria is located right in the Paseo Güemes, the gastronomic pole of fashion in the city, is a place of empanadas and pizzas, also known for   gigantic 12-slice pizzas.

 

When entering at the local you can see a patio, where there is a small artisan oven of clay surrounded by firewood. Here are the empanadas and in a matter of few minutes come out completely golden.
