When you organize your trip to see the Perito Moreno Glacier, you will notice that one of the main options is to do it through boat trips within Los Glaciares National Park, located 77 kilometers from the city of El Calafate.

With the navigations you will not only be able to see the famous Perito Moreno but you will also find other gigantic ice masses that make up the glacier field of Patagonia.

Among so many alternatives, it is likely that it will be difficult for you to see the differences between each walk and doubts arise about which one is appropriate. For this reason in this note we seek to help you find the best option as clearly as possible.

Perito Moreno Glacier Navigation (Nautical Safari)

This excursion is the shortest and cheapest. It lasts one hour and navigates through the Brazo Rico of Lago Argentino, which allows you to get closer to the icebergs coming from the Perito Moreno ice. Upon reaching the glacier walls, the boat stops for a few minutes to observe the landscape in more detail and take photos. Departures are every day from 11 am to 4 pm from Puerto Las Sombras, within Los Glaciares National Park.

There is also the option of doing the tour in private accompanied by one of the best guides in the area and with a vehicle that takes you and brings you to the hotel. On this tour you will not only be able to navigate through Lago Argentino and get close to the walls of the Perito Moreno Glacier, but you will also have enough time to walk the walkways within the National Park in a calm and unhurried way.

If you want to do something different, the Sunset tour at the Perito Moreno Glacier is ideal for those who arrive in El Calafate that same morning or for those who want to enjoy a sunset in the National Park watching the sun set on the horizon and generate amazing colors on the lake and ice. In addition to the navigation to the Perito Moreno, this excursion includes a walk through the catwalks. You will be able to visit them at an ideal time, since most people return to the city and there is a lot of tranquility.

Río de Hielo Navigation

This tour is essential to know the rest of the glaciers of the National Park, since it is the only one that takes you to Upsala and Spegazzini, the highest glacier in the Park at 135 meters. You will also be able to see the Glaciar Seco and the Onelli. The navigation departs from the private port Punta Bandera and goes through icebergs and frozen waters of Lake Argentino. This tour can be done in the Express or Sunset version, the first is in the morning and the second, in the afternoon, watching the sunset on the glaciers. Both are half-day expeditions and include transfers to and from El Calafate.

Glaciers Gourmet Experience

The María Turquesa Cruise offers through "Gourmet Glaciers" an interesting proposal to get to know the Perito Moreno Glacier in an exclusive and personalized way. You will travel through the waters of Lake Argentino in search of the wall that is more than 50 meters high, ancient ice and majestic icebergs. It is a Full Day option (duration 10 hours) that allows you to see other glaciers such as Spegazzini and Upsala. The difference with the rest of the navigations is that during the tour the passengers descend in the Spegazzini Channel bay to take a walk coordinated by a guide to appreciate different panoramic points of the Los Glaciares National Park. In addition, it has a delicious gourmet lunch to enjoy on board: Lamb sandwich with homemade mustard, Creole cheese and caramelized onions, accompanied with baked potatoes and smoked cheese sauce. For dessert, a Caramel Mouse, crunchy carob and red fruit preserves. Includes a non-alcoholic drink. In addition, there is a vegetarian menu and a menu suitable for celiacs.

Towards the afternoon, the Cruise arrives at Puesto de Las Vacas (extremely quiet bay within the Spegazzini Canal), where it silences its engines to allow passengers to share an interesting walk coordinated by the team of guides. It will be a total of one hour through the Patagonian forest and a field where livestock was practiced. The path will take you to magnificent panoramic points where you will be able to observe and take pictures of the Spegazzini Glacier from another perspective.

Navigation to Estancia Cristina

This tour can be enjoyed in two ways:

The navigation begins at 8 am crossing icebergs along the Upsala and Cristina Canal until you reach the Estancia, where you will spend the rest of the day to learn about its history and traditions. You can also visit the Costumbrista Museum, the old town and its wildlife surroundings. A walk is made to visit the Caterina River and the Chapel. After some guided activities, passengers are invited to a typical lunch with a delicious barbecue. Then you can continue enjoying the country setting until you start your return in the afternoon.

In this 10-hour tour, in addition to navigating from Puerto Bandera to the Estancia, you will also be able to ride a 4x4 vehicle and go on walks. It is a fairly complete excursion that allows you to observe the Cordón Feruglio, Lake Guillermo, the imposing eastern front of the Upsala Glacier, the Southern Patagonian Ice, the Cerro Murallón and Don Bosco and the Cañadón de los Fósiles (An area where there is a large concentration of fossils). The only thing to keep in mind in boat trips to Estancia Cristina is that they can only be done from April to October.

Todo Glaciares, the most complete navigation

This navigation is one of the few that allows you to get closer to the most distant and inaccessible glaciers such as Upsala, Spegazzini and Seco. You will have the opportunity to travel comfortably inside the catamaran or you can walk on the balconies and the deck, which allows you to have the possibility of taking wonderful photos.

But navigation is not everything, you will make a landing at the Spegazzini Base, a piece of land in the middle of the immensity of Lake Argentino and the field of Glaciers. There they go along a path to a refuge where they will have lunch with very beautiful panoramic views. Then they will continue with some walks without much complexity through the forest that will take them to different viewpoints with views of the National Park. Other trails are also offered for those who want medium difficulty trekking. The total duration of the tour is 10 hours and leaves every day with pick ups from the city.

Option of trekking and navigation in National Park

It is one of the most complete tours that you will find, since you can enjoy navigations, trekking activities and a bus ride (along the “Ruta de las Estancias”) in the same day.

The excursion includes a one-hour navigation through Lake Roca, where you will have unique views of the typical Patagonian steppe, mixed with the lengas forests. Then you will descend from the boat and continue through a trekking circuit until you reach Lake Frías, where you will sail again in a small and safe motor boat (zodiacs) to the amphitheater of the glaciers where you will enjoy a lunch with a wonderful sight.
