The town of Tilcara is in the center of the Quebrada de Humahuaca and receives thousands of visitors every year.

This place is an important archaeological center due to the vestiges of ancient indigenous settlements.

Pucará de Tilcara

The Pucara de Tilcara is the most important archaeological site in Argentina. The pucará was a place to defend and settlement of the pre-Columbian inhabitants of the ravine. The Pucará was installed in a strategic area by the crossing of old roads, from where it could monitor and control the access to different regions of the northwest.

The ruins were discovered by the ethnographer Juan Bautista Ambrosetti who began with the work of recovering the place in 1908, the work continued by Salvador Debenedetti. The archaeological area of ??the Pucará de Tilcara has an area of ??15 hectares divided into different sectors such as houses, corrals, the ceremonial center and the cemetery.

Botanical Garden

This curious botanical garden is next to the Pucará de Tilcara. The garden has a wide collection of plants that grow in the heights of the hills and La Puna. Cactus, cardones, medicinal and aromatic plants grow in the stone walls, known as pircas.

The Garganta del Diablo is a geological formation of imposing beauty that can be visited from Tilcara by car or walking along a pedestrian path. The area is known for its tall, narrow canyons with waterfalls and beautiful landscapes. The walk is recommended for those looking to enjoy the outdoors and the mountains. The Garganta del Diablo is 5 kilometers from Tilcara.

Pucara de Juella

The Pucara de Juella is another archaeological site located 17 kilometers from Tilcara. It is reached from the town of Juella by a path next to the river. To arrive there, you must leave the car and continue walking. In the archaeological site, we can appreciate the ruins of the old towns and beautiful landscapes.
